  • Pilot G2 + Potato Message = Money

I thought this was a joke when I first heard it. Actually, I'm still not convinced that it isn't some big hoax.

But it was on TV, so it has to be true, right?

A man in Texas – it would have to be Texas, wouldn't it – has created a business out of writing on potatoes with a Pilot G2 and sending them to people.

Alex Craig calls it "Potato Parcel" and he told a local news crew that his potato message business started out as a challenge from his girlfriend. Continue reading

  • ARC Pen To Help Parkinson's Patients Write

If you're someone who loves the feel and experience of writing by hand, could you imagine losing that ability?

It happens to Parkinson's patients who develop bradykinesia, a symptom which slows movement and affects fine motor control. Writing becomes painful, leading to small, cramped handwriting, called micrographia.

That's why a group of UK university students have developed a pen specially designed to ease the writing experience for those with Parkinson's disease. (About 127,000 people in the UK have Parkinson's and about two-thirds develop micrographia.)

  • Bic Pen Ads Take Another Misstep

bic adI feel bad for the people who have to make Bic pen ads.

They just can't seem to get it right when it comes to women.

Remember the "Bic For Her" campaign a few years ago? The French pen brand launched a version of the classic Cristal with pastel colors and a thinner barrel it said was supposed to fit a woman's hand.

That did not go over well. Reviewers on Amazon savaged the Bic For Her with snarky comments and questions like, "Do you have any special pens for 'that time of the month?'" And the reaction to Bic's pen made news around the world, especially when the company was slow to respond.

Now Bic pen ads have stepped in it again with a campaign in South Africa. Continue reading

  • Sharpie's Not On Social Media Anymore

sharpieSo the Sharpie brand seems to have completely abandoned its social media accounts.

Arik Hanson at made that interesting catch recently, writing that he discovered it while doing some research for a client.

When I first saw his article, I thought it might just be a mistake. Surely a huge brand like Sharpie would not just stop interacting with all the people who love using their products.

But after a little poking around, it became clear that he was right. The last updates on Sharpie's social media accounts were:

These were significant accounts, too. For example, Sharpie had been on Twitter since 2008, had sent nearly 12,000 tweets and had 188,000 followers.

There's no indication on any of them that Sharpie planned to stop using social media. They just...end. It's almost a little eerie. Continue reading

  • Relax, Focus With Adult Coloring

marvel coloring bookIf you've ever spent much time in the hospital, you know how bored you can get. That happened to me recently when I was in for quite a long stay.

I'd run out of books, got tired of TV and wasn't all that mobile. I was desperate for something to do. Luckily, a kind nurse turned up a Marvel coloring book and a tub of crayons. Kid stuff, but I was in no position to scoff.

For the first time since grade school, I put Crayola to paper and turned out quite a nice Captain America, even if his suit was deep black and his shield a shiny purple.

Wow, I had no idea how relaxing coloring could be for an adult. It's one of those singular tasks that requires all your focus – and none of it. Your hands and eyes take over and your mind feels free to wander where it will. Continue reading
