Thanks for posting the link. You're right, it's a great feeling to get a handwritten letter these days.

Handwritten letters have always had a place in peoples hearts and minds, they appreciate the personal effort, care and attention that goes into them. There are many examples on our website www.handwrittenletters.com of peoples positive emotions when writing, sending and particularly receiving handwritten letters.

Not sure how the American military does it now, but during the first Gulf War in 90-91 soldiers didn't always have paper and envelopes, so they'd write letters on anything they could find -- even pieces torn from cardboard boxes -- and the postal service would deliver them. No stamps were required.

When I was serving in the RAF away on excersise or detatchment in the days before mobile phones a letter to and from home was most appreciated.

We used to write on a blue self sealing airmail form nicknamed "blue-ies". I am pretty sure that they are still used today and assume that the U.S Armed Forces have something similar.

@Speedmaster: Thanks, we appreciate the response. Now go write a letter! :-)

@Lefty: That was a great post and an interesting piece from the Telegraph. I'd assumed that Baby Boomers would be at least semi-prolific letter writers, but apparently not.
