Carol, I think you're absolutely right about the fate of fountain pens being tied to handwriting. But don't mourn the demise of handwriting just yet. Check out this post about new research suggesting that kids might actually need to learn good handwriting. And keep an eye out for an upcoming handwriting contest we'll be holding here...winners will get some nice goodies.

Within the last few months I've purchased 14 fountain pens, beginning with the $.99 Chinese pens that can be found on E-Bay and which are of surprisingly excellent quality for the price. I have since graduated to spending $30 for fountain pens (which retail for over $150) on E-bay auctions. I'd love to be able to buy the more expensive pens, but . . . .

I love the sensuous side of fountain pens--the design, the feeling of gliding across the page with a broad nib and wet ink. I always wish that I had been blessed with pretty handwriting rather than the pointed slanted scrawl that despite my best efforts, I cannot escape.

Could the popularity of fountain pens be linked to handwriting? I recently learned that my local public school system does not teach cursive writing because kids will use computers. I can't imagine that someone who only prints will want to use a fountain pen. I am on the founding board of a charter school in which all students will be taught and will use cursive writing. At our school, fountain pens will be the standard for all students.

Well I don't know about the trend of fountain pen sales and according to your charts I'm supposing that perhaps the demand for fountain pens has diminished. However, I have purchased more fountain pens in the past 4 weeks than any other kind and also introduced a cute preppy fountain pen to my daughter , 13, who absolutely loves it. I'm of course an avid pen collector although I must admit i can't afford the higher end luxury pens as Montblanc. Which I would love to have.
But I think that fountain pens could become popular again. I've always liked them above the average ballpoint, but when the rollerball was introduced I think that many of us preferred that model instead. But I have returned to my trusty fountain pen and with all the colors now available to the consumer I would think that perhaps it could rise from the dead. :]
